Meet the Doctors

You've probably heard the saying, "Two heads are better than one." We've taken that to heart at MCC. With two chiropractors on staff, you get the benefit of extra brainpower. Especially with difficult cases.

Introducing Mindarie Chiropractor Dr. Natasha A. Lake-Bruno

Welcome to Mindarie Chiropractic! My name is Dr. Natasha Lake, and I am the senior practicing chiropractor here at Mindarie Chiropractic! I am not a native of Australia, but after spending four years here I consider it to be my second home!

I was born and raised in a small town in Newfoundland, Canada (very cold!). After completing high-school, I left home to continue my post-secondary education at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada where I studied courses such as anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, biology and psychology ) to name a few. After four long years I received my Bachelor of Science (Honours in Biology), but I wasn’t finished there!

Originally, my plan was to go to medical school and become a surgeon. While studying pre-med in University, I shadowed many doctors for a while. During that time, it amazed me how often the doctors would just treat the symptoms, but never look into what was actually causing them. I figured, there had to be a better way. That is when I became more interested in finding out more about alternative health care methods. Then, something wonderful happened. I was introduced to Chiropractic! The ideas and philosophies that chiropractors had really appealed to me. So much so that that year I applied to chiropractic school.

I was accepted into the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in the summer of 1999. I decided on this school because it had a great reputation and well, it was my only option in Canada. While at school, I realized the curriculum was very similar to medical school. I took many of the same classes. During my four years at CMCC courses included neuroanantomy, physiology, diagnosis, radiography, adjusting techniques etc., and finished with a year of clinical internship. I also took extra classes in nutrition and acupuncture and received my Diplomate in Acupuncture. It amazed me throughout my education at CMCC how many people in my class were there starting a second career. Some people were nurses, some were pharmaceutical reps, and some were actually medical doctors. That was when it hit me that I had made the right decision. When someone quits a great job and career to start out fresh, get a new education and they are older, there must be a good reason. That is how strongly these people felt about chiropractic. This is how strongly I feel about chiropractic!

After another four years of school, I received my Doctorate of Chiropractic. Then, I decided that I needed a well deserved break so I set out for Australia (planned on taking a short trip/holiday)! Once I arrived in Perth I started working a little to help out a chiropractor here and have been living and working here ever since! I am current member of the Chiropractic Association of Australia and have already had the privilege of serving on the board for one year as secretary.

Over the years, I've personally experienced the benefits of chiropractic care, not only for a few injuries and symptoms, but primarily as the central part of my overall health and wellness program. I believe in a safe, gentle & effective whole body approach for the treatment of illness and wellness care. In addition to spinal alignment, I believe in integrating exercise, diet and stress management into your treatment plan. At Mindarie Chiropractic we use natural, drug-free methods to maintain your optimal health. One of my favourite quotes is one by Mr. Thomas Edison, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”

My whole life I have felt that your health is the most important thing you can have. Let's face it, if you are not healthy, how can you enjoy life? The thing that most people do not understand is that, there is more to health than just not being sick. Whether you are a child, middle age, or elderly, everyone can be healthy. I believe in treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. I work with you on nutrition, exercise, stress and posture to help correct the issues causing the pain. I love to see the look on people's faces when they talk about how they were finally able to play with their kids or grandkids, or how they were able to play a sport again, go for a run or simply work without any discomfort. Knowing that I was able to help someone enjoy life gives me a sense of meaning and fulfilment.

When I am not at the office, I enjoy spending time with my wonderful husband Dr. Paul Bruno, my step-daughter Marina, and my dog, Rocco. We are rarely home doing nothing whether it is camping, boating, at the beach, walking Rocco or travelling. I love everything Australia has to offer!

Everyone always wants to know how often chiropractors get adjusted. I usually get adjusted at least once a week. Let's be realistic, I'm hard on my body. My job is very physical. My body needs frequent fine tuning to stay in shape. I try to take care of myself. The key is in making very well informed health decisions. In our family, we use nutrition, nutritional supplements, exercise and chiropractic to stay healthy. For those are the key ingredients in creating wellness.

Chiropractic has given me the opportunity to help so many people in a way I never dreamed possible. I was always interested in health care, but when I discovered chiropractic I knew it was perfect for me. I love giving people the gift of health and teaching them what true health is. I believe every family deserves to enjoy great health and quality of life. I believe that all parents should have their children checked for subluxations from birth and for the rest of their lives so they can express their fullest potential. An ideal practice for me would be full of families and individuals whose goal is the active pursuit of health, not crisis management.

Thanks for visiting our website. I look forward to meeting you in person and learning how I can be of service to you. Give our office a call or email using the link below and arrange a time for you to take your first step towards better health!

Introducing Mindarie Chiropractor Dr. Rebecca Hewitt

Hi. My name is Dr Rebecca Hewitt and I am excited to be a part of the team at Mindarie Chiropractic since January, 2008.

Having completed my schooling at Santa Maria, in Attadale and human biology being the only subject I truly enjoyed and being mildly sporty, I completed a degree in Human Movement at UWA (Honours in exercise physiology). As the industry at the time was in its infancy, I accidentally fell into a role as a pharmaceutical representative.

Unfortunately I always knew that this was not a career choice that would sustain me long term. I simply did not feel I was making any sort of difference to the world. I had always been someone who sprung out of bed in the morning eager to greet the day! When I finally realized that this had ceased, I knew it was time to begin my search for my true passion.

I figured if I could combine my science degree with something that involved helping people, I would be on the right track. I read a book by Barbara Sher called, “You could do anything you want, if only you knew what!” I began thinking back to my uncle who had always adjusted us as children when we had tumbles, or had, in our infinite wisdom, decided that bare back horse riding in the neighbor’s paddock would be a lot of fun, not to mention, very clever!

Living in Melbourne at the time, I began visiting and chatting with various chiropractors. I was amazed by how much everyone wanted to help, and the general altruistic nature of all whom I came in contact with. When the first chiropractor I spoke to asked me why I was considering chiropractic, I was proud to explain to him that I thought it would be personally rewarding to relieve people in pain. He began shaking his head and “tutting” me. Oh dear! What could I possibly have said wrong?

He went on to explain to me that chiropractic was not only about symptoms but about the nervous system; that symptoms were the last thing to occur and that misalignment and nervous dysfunction occurs long before; that chiropractic addressed the cause of the symptoms and could have an impact on not only pain relief but digestion, energy levels, and everything controlled by the nervous system. Well I was excited! I finally knew what I wanted to do!

At the ripe old age of 30, I was back Perth, back to school, and to their overwhelming joy and excitement, back to Mum and Dad ;-)))). Surprisingly, it was one of the easiest decisions of my life!

I now live in South Perth with my boyfriend, Brendan, and have inherited his Siamese cat, Mercedes. Go on, ask me if I like cats?!!! Well I don’t but her nature is closer to that of a dog so she kind of grows on you. She still has not grasped fetching the news paper but I’m not giving up!

I love to keep fit with regular running along the beach or river, swimming and more rarely, a few weights. I enjoy a healthy diet of loads of fresh produce and just a few treats. Japanese food is my absolute favorite!

My goal for my patients is to get them as close as possible to their optimal health and work together with them to achieve this through a holistic approach of natural health care, diet and exercise. If a patient does not understand that simply being free of symptoms is NOT a sign of optimal health, it is my fault as I have not educated them sufficiently!

How often do I get adjusted? Before I began practicing I found that once a fortnight was sufficient. But now that my days are fairly physical, I get one of my colleagues to take care of me at least once a week and that keeps my energy levels optimal.

Thanks for visiting our website. I look forward to meeting you and working with you to achieve your greatest health potential!
